Homestay is crucial to the success for any student or group’s study visit to Canada. If you are a new host, this will be an exciting opportunity for you! Canada Homestay Network is here to help you during this exciting process! As a host, the information that is provided to us must be kept up to date in order to provide you and the students with a great experience.
On-Call Emergency Line¶
We are available 24 hours of the day, 7 days a week. This line is used for emergencies only. In the event of a medical emergency, first call 911. Then call our on- call representative. Please be aware that the person you reach may not be in your local area. For more information please read the Medical Emergencies page.
The on-call emergency line is intended for support that is needed immediately. Here are some reasons why you should call the on-call emergency line:
1) The student is missing for an extended period of time
2) The student has not arrived to your home after their flight landed
If you do have a question or concern and it is during office hours, please contact your Relationship Manager directly.
Every semester, CHN Relationship Managers (RMs) write status reports on each of our homestay students. The reports are intended to update parents on their childs progress and adjustment to their Canadian life, homestay and school. This call may come from your RM or from another staff member, and will last anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes.
Criminal Reference Check¶
We require a Police Records Check for the Vulnerable Sector (VSS) from those who wish to host minors and adults, and a Criminal Reference Check from those who wish to host adults only. A police/VSS check or criminal check is required for every member of the household 18 years or older(19 in BC and NB). It must be dated within the last three years.
Keeping your Host Profile Up To Date¶
Take a moment to review the Host_Portal_Instructions_10.2.pdf. This document will provide you with information of how to navigate through the host portal.
This is a reminder that as CHN hosts, you must notify CHN when there is a change in your household. This notification allows us to update your host profile so that it reflects changes that may affect a potential match with a student.
Here are some examples of what we need to be notified of:
- Someone is moving into or out of your home, i.e. parent or child, relative, renter/boarder, student from an organization other than CHN.
- A visitor staying in your home for a month or longer, or visiting regularly, i.e. relative, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend.
- A baby on the way.
- A marital separation or divorce.
- A new or lost pet.
- Changes in the bedrooms or the number of bedrooms available for students.
- Renovations in your home.
- House being put up for sale or move to a new address.
- New email address and new phone numbers.
- New occupation.
Please note that CHN must be notified of all changes to your household in advance, so that we can proactively inform your student or upcoming student, their parents and their agents. Also note that CHN requires a Police Check for all members of the household aged 18 and up, including visitors living in the home for a month or more and regular visitors.
